Former World Champion Veselin Topalov visited the Club on April 25th 2012 to give a simultaneous display against 20 Scottish Players. 5 of our members played, Andrew Green, Alastair White (hoping to add to a previous draw against Smyslov!), Clement Sreeves, Hugh Brechin and Mike Ridge. Hugh was one of 5 players to draw, with the sole victory coming from Glasgow based IM Andrew Greet.
The event was organised by Chess Scotland as part of a campaign for Chess in Schools by the European Chess Union President, Silvio Danailov. It was a huge success, with a great deal of spectator and media interest. Further reports are available at the following sites:
