Richardson Cup 2012-13 - the Path to Victory

Preliminary Round v Cathcart (Home, Nov 17)

  Edinburgh
Cathcart

2216 Berry, Neil M (FM) ½   ½ McKay, Roddy M (IM)  2277
2213 Sreeves, Clement 1   0 Grant, Alan G  2114
2194 Bremner, Adam 0   1 Maxwell, Alistair  1887
2159 Green, Andrew D 1   0 Tsang, Sai Kong 1830
2048 Oswald, David C ½   ½ Taylor, Allen  1740
2027 Kafka, Graeme  ½   ½ Stewart, Alan W 1657
1906 Fernandez Lorenzo, Alberto 1   0 Congalton, David G  1293
1880 Murdochy, Shivan 1   0 Fay, James  1270

We were slightly unfortunate to be drawn to play in the preliminary round (there were 9 Teams in total so there was only one match), although in general the draw was fine for us this year. We were big favourites to win this match, and things were looking good early on. Berry drew on 1 (the opening sequence 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 e5!? was the most interesting part of the game), and Murdochy and Fernandez Lorenzo made their rating advantages count. It wasn’t all plain sailing elsewhere though, and there were a few nervy moments given we would likely lose any tie on board count. Eventually a win from Green took us through, and Sreeves overturned a dodgy position to give the scoreline a more comfortable feel.

Quarter Final v Oban (Away, played in Callander, Jan 19)

  Oban
Edinburgh

2116 Lennox, C Jonathan  ½   ½ MacQueen, Calum 2272
  DEFAULT  0   1 Berry, Neil M (FM)  2216
1898 Campbell, Duncan A F  0   1 Sreeves, Clement 2213
1799 Campbell, Alistair W I  0   1 Green, Andrew D 2159
1675 Harrold, Bruce T ½   ½ McGowan, Daniel 2064
1576 Flockhart, Hugh S ½   ½ Oswald, David C 2048
1418 Coope, Derek W  ½   ½ Brechin, Hugh R  2024
1226 White, Geoffrey  0   1 Bhopal, Raj  1983
    2   6

A fairly comfortable victory, although Oban fought well and made us work for our semi final place.

Semi Final v Wandering Dragons (Home, March 9)

  Wandering Dragons
Edinburgh

2349 Tate, Alan (FM)  1   0 MacQueen, Calum  2272
2249 Burnett, Andrew B  ½   ½ Berry, Neil M (FM) 2216
2248 Bathie, Nicol A  0   1 Sreeves, Clement 2213
2164 Minnican, Alan W  ½   ½ Bremner, Adam 2194
2144 Orr, Mark J L (IM) 1   0 Oswald, David C 2048
2007 Olson, Hamish  0   1 Robertson, David A  2032
2002 Foulger, John G  0   1 Brechin, Hugh R  2024
1923 Kynoch, Richard J P  0   1 Bhopal, Raj 1983
    3   5

Not for the first time, we led early on following convincing wins for Brechin and Bhopal. Dragons hit back with wins on boards 1 and 5, and there were 2 draws that followed. We held the advantage on the games in play, with Robertson having a winning position, and Sreeves was a pawn up. However, board count again was not in our favour, so one slip would turn the match on its head. Despite some wobbles Robertson duly converted, and Sreeves also won to take us through to the final.

Final v Edinburgh West (Alva Street, Apr 27)

  Edinburgh West
Edinburgh

2347 Arakhamia-Grant, Ketevan (GM)  0   1 MacQueen, Calum  2272
2380 Pritchett, Craig W (IM)  ½   ½ Berry, Neil M (FM) 2216
2173 Grant, Jonathan I M  ½   ½ Sreeves, Clement 2213
2097 Farrell, Neil R  ½   ½ Bremner, Adam 2194
2051 Neave, George 0   1 Oswald, David C 2048
2112 Buchanan, Walter F  ½   ½ Robertson, David A  2032
1946 Bell, Alan D  ½   ½ Brechin, Hugh R 2024
1884 Walker, Duncan  0   1 Brechin, Hugh R 1983

On agreement from both clubs and Chess Scotland, the match was played at Edinburgh Chess Club. Our line-up was unchanged from the semi-final. Brechin drew quickly with Black, and Oswald won a miniature with some fantastic preparation in the Dragon. Things were also looking good for Bhopal and he duly converted. Yet again we were leading but had some difficult positions in the remaining games, this time Berry and Sreeves were the ones under pressure. Draws for Bremner and Robertson put us within touching distance of the win. It was duly delivered by MacQueen, winning in style against Grandmaster opposition. We held firm on the last 2 games before the celebrations began.
