Dear Club Member

This is the first of 2 messages I will be sending this week.  It will be a busy few months!

  1. Note from Andre below about the running of the Club Championship this season:

We will be organising 2022’s club Championship (on the board!) in a different format this year.

It will be an open (to club players) swiss tournament with a faster time control (45 min for each player) spread over 2 days.

I would like to accommodate the biggest number of players, so if you’d like to participate, please fill in the link below which dates you would be available:

https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/azp8vgZd (or let Andre know at serigado+ecc@protonmail.com)

Details on the tournament will be provided once I get an idea how many people

Thanks!

Andre Antunes

  1. There is a festival happening at the club over the jubilee weekend (1-5 June) – made up of an IM Norm event, Challengers and Blitz.  Details at the link below:

  1. The Scottish Championship will be held at the club this year, as a closed event, from July 2-10.  Again details can be found at Chess Scotland.

4. We are delighted to welcome a visit fromSchaakstad Apeldoorn to the club on 15-17 July.  I’ll be looking to form a Team to play against the visitors.  Early expressions of interest is welcome, though I’ll look to make up the side nearer the time.

Best wishes

Neil

We are now proceeding to the final round (5) and pairings have been sent out –  please contact your opponent and arrange a convenient time/date to play.   Once you finish please let me (Andre) know the result.

Enjoy your games!

Andre Antunes, Tournament Director

Dear Club Member,

Thank you to Andre for getting the Online Club Championship up and running.

Tuesday 8th December

We are playing an online match tomorrow evening against a very strong Czech side Spartak Vlasim.  One of their players visited the club last summer – see the link [get Google to translate the Czech into English in your browser – their visit to the club itself in Edinburgh was probably the highlight of the trip and see a lovely photo of Colin!].  The club have contacts with GM David Navara, who has sent us a signed copy of his new book!

Wednesday 9th December

This Wednesday’s blitz tournament has a 7.45pm start. [Members have been emailed link and password to join: password is 1822 click on https://lichess.org/tournament/OylbsQ2a to join.]

Tuesday 15th December
I suggest we have an informal catch up on Zoom as an alternative to the Christmas evening.  There will be an opportunity to play some informal chess on lichess – and can also go through the basics of online chess for any new members. [Members have been emailed link and password to join].

Best wishes

Neil

Club Blitz 2019 Championship

The end of season blitz tournament was ably run by Andre on Tuesday 18th June over 7 rounds. Raj, with supplemental assistance from David, ensured that we all were all well acquainted with the blitz rules (which enabled me to swindle a win against Keith in a totally lost position!).

The competition was contested by 19 players with the trophy (to be presented at the AGM in September) finally being won by Club President Neil who achieved an unbeaten score of 6.5/7.

Neil was closely chased into second place with a score of 5.5/7 by visitor Andy (now based in Washington DC but originally from Chicago). I had quickly lost my way playing the Benko Gambit against him ….. perhaps retribution for walking off with Andy’s home town trophy way back in 1988 (run by Chicago Lawn Chess Association)!?!?

Petros took 3rd place with a score of 5/7.

A great time was had by all – an excellent evening.

Unfortunately 2018 reigning champion Sergio Bermudez was unable to participate this year – but here’s belated recognition of his win last year:
