Club Championship Semi-Final Results

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Draw for Final:

Shivan Murdochy vs David Archibald

(to be played at the club, proposed date Sunday 4th July, game 1 to start at 11am)

Members are welcome to attend to spectate.

Semi Final Results:

The battle to get to the final was hard fought with both games running to tie-breaks, although not in the same scale of the recent 70-68 Isner-Mahut result at Wimbledon.

Shivan Murdochy 1 – 1 Keith Aitchison, with Shivan winning the tie break 1-1 (allegro), 2-0 (blitz).

David Archibald 1 – 1 Rod Cranston, with David winning the tie break 2-0 (allegro)

Grading:

All full-length games played in the championship have been submitted for SCA grading to appear in the new grading list.

A few games from the 2009 championships have also been included that were played after last year’s deadline.

Edinburgh CC FIDE Swiss

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

The club ran a successful Swiss event on the weekends of June 12-13 and 19-20.  18 players participated, with 6 rated over 2000.  The club was well represented by Daniel McGowan, Hugh Brechin, Clement Sreeves, Mark Sanderson, Mike Ridge, Johnny Scott and Shivan Murdochy.

Final Standings:

1 Paul Roberts 6.5/8 2-4 Hugh Brechin, Chris Macdonald, Walter Burnett 5.5 5 Mike Ridge 5 6-7 Andrew McHarg, John McBride 4.5 8-9 Daniel McGowan, Stuart Hayes 4 10-15 Johnny Scott, Shivan Murdochy, Nigel Chapman, Clement Sreeves, Gavin Saxton, Eoin Campbell 3.5 16 Jamie Mollison 3 17 Mark Sanderson 3 18 Hutch Williams 0

Paul Roberts was a deserved winner of the event, although he was pushed very hard in a number of games and had to defend an inferior ending in the last round against Chris Macdonald to secure outright first.  Hugh Brechin was matching Paul for most of the event until a round 7 defeat to Chris, who along with Walter Burnett had a strong finish to the event.

Andrew McHarg edged out Hugh for the performance rating prize, with a score of +1.48 ahead of FIDE expected score.  Of the unrated players, Mike Ridge had a great recovery following a 0/2 start to register a 2025 performance.  Results should be included in time for the July 1 Chess Scotland grading list, and hopefully the next FIDE list too.

We hope to run a similar event next year following this success.

David Archibald vs Rod Cranston

Semi-Final Game 1 – Mon June 7th*
Semi-Final Game 2 – Mon June 14th

* David and Rod are playing this game on Thurs 10th June.

Final:

I was considering approaching the National Museum of Scotland to see if they would consider allowing us to play the final in the exhibition area holding the Lewis Chessmen (with a small partition) – perhaps involving the press? Please let me know if you think this is a good idea?
I’m keen to get this played before the end of the month so that all games can be submitted before the July grading deadline. If you are potentially in the final please could you let me know which weekend dates suit (provisionally we have Sunday June 20th).

Round 2 Results:

Mike Ridge 0.5 – 1.5 Shivan Murdochy
Johnny Marr 0 – 2 Keith Aitchison
David Archibald 1.5 – 0.5 Mark Sanderson
Rod Cranston 2 – 0 Robert Horne

Plate :

Unfortunately I’ve only had 2 entries for the plate. Callum and Robert, please let me know if you would like to play a rated game?
